US Citizenship Civics Test: 2008 vs 2025 — Which Version Should You Study?

The civics test you take during your naturalization interview depends on when you filed your N-400 application. USCIS currently uses two versions of the civics test. Most applicants filing today should study the 128-question civics test.

100-Question Civics Test

(2008 test version)

For applicants who filed before October 20, 2025.
Up to 10 questions asked · 6 correct needed to pass.

128-Question Civics Test

(2025 test version)

For applicants who filed on or after October 20, 2025.
Up to 20 questions asked · 12 correct needed to pass.

Note: the English reading, writing, and speaking tests have not changed.

The civics test covers key U.S. history and government topics. There are 100 civics questions on the naturalization test, and during your interview, you'll be asked up to 10 questions from the list. To pass, you must correctly answer 6 of the 10 questions.
