Civics Test 2025 Changes
⚠️ Important: The new U.S. citizenship civics test only applies if you file your naturalization application on or after October 20, 2025. If you filed before that date, you’ll continue with the current version of the test.
What’s Changing in 2025
- The question bank expands from 100 to 128 questions.
- You must now answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly to pass (previously 6 out of 10).
- Many questions will require more detailed answers instead of one-word responses.
USCIS says these changes are meant to ensure applicants show a deeper understanding of U.S. history and civics as part of the naturalization process.
Why This Matters
The civics test is one of the final steps in becoming a U.S. citizen. With a higher passing threshold and more complex questions, it’s important to prepare using updated study materials if you’re filing after October 20, 2025.
