How to Apply for US Citizenship:
A Step-by-Step Guide

Becoming a US citizen involves a clear, structured process. Here’s how to apply for US citizenship:

1. Check Your Eligibility

Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria, such as being a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years (3 years if married to a US citizen), maintaining continuous residence, and meeting physical presence and moral character requirements.

2. Prepare Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization)

The first step is completing Form N-400, which is the application for naturalization. Gather necessary documents such as proof of your permanent residency (green card), evidence of time spent in the US, tax documents, and marriage certificate (if applicable). Carefully review all instructions and double-check your responses.

3. Submit Your Application

After completing Form N-400, you’ll need to submit it along with supporting documentation and the filing fee. Applications can be submitted either online or by mail through the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

4. Attend Biometrics Appointment

After submitting your application, you’ll be scheduled for a biometrics appointment. During this appointment, your fingerprints, photo, and signature will be collected for background checks.

5. Complete the Naturalization Interview

Once your biometrics are processed, USCIS will schedule a naturalization interview. During this interview, a USCIS officer will ask you questions about your application, background, and your knowledge of US civics, history, and government (civics test).

6. Pass the Civics and English Tests

You’ll need to pass the naturalization tests, which include:

  • Civics Test: A set of questions about US history and government.
  • English Test: Tests your ability to speak, read, and write basic English.

7. Receive a Decision

USCIS will either approve, continue, or deny your application. If approved, you’ll be scheduled for the Oath of Allegiance ceremony.

8. Take the Oath of Allegiance

The final step to becoming a US citizen is taking the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony. After taking the oath, you’ll receive your Certificate of Naturalization, officially becoming a US citizen.
